About Malappuram

Malappuram district has a rich and vibrant history. The military headquarters of the Zamorins of Kozhikode since ancient times, this district was the site for many of the Mappila Revolts (uprising against the British East India Company in Kerala) between 1792 and 1921. Malappuram literally means a land atop hills and the region is enriched by three great rivers flowing through it - the Chaliyar, Kadalundi and the Bharathapuzha.

Malappuram has made numerous contributions to the cultural heritage of Kerala. A famous centre for Hindu-Vedic learning and Islamic philosophy, the temples and mosques of this region are well known for their spectacular festivals. ... Malappuram district has a rich and vibrant history.

Bharathapuzha River

Flowing along a stretch of 209 km, Bharathapuzha River is also called River Nila. It is the second longest river in Kerala and provides shelter to 11 reservoirs with Malampuzha dam being the largest.

This river originates from Anaimalai hills of Western Ghats and flows towards the west direction. On the way, many rivers join Bharathapuzha and finally flow into the Arabian Sea. The river spreads across the Palakkad and Malappuram districts

Nilambur Teak Museum

Established in 1994, Nilambur Teak Museum is the first teak museum in the country. They have a collection of information in the form of articles and comprehensive documents that also mention the historic and artistic value of the wood.

Kerala has had a long association with teak and has always played a central role in its cultivation and trade. The word teak itself is said to have come from the Malayalam word 'theku'. The Teak Museum in Nilambur celebrates this ancient relationship and takes one on a special journey through history, chronicling teak and its importance in our culture.

Kottakkunnu

Kottakkunnu is a mesmerising garden situated on a hill. Its beauty is often compared with the picturesque Marine Drive in Mumbai. The attraction has a Water Park, an Adventure Park, an Art Gallery, 16D cinema, an Open Air Theatre and a Balloon Park. These amusements make Kottakkunnu a perfect picnic spot.

Steeped in history, this area is famous for its friendly and peaceful vibe. The fort was incidentally the first to be built by the Zamorins (rulers) of Kozhikode. The murals at the Vettakkorumakan Temple and the Siva Temple are another source of intrigue in the area.
