About Kannur

Kannur is most renowned for the Theyyam performances in its temples. This magnificent art form plays an integral part in the culture of this Northern Kerala district. Formerly known as Cannanore, Marco Polo christened it a ‘Great Emporium Of Spice Trade’.

Legend has it that it had interactions and trade relations with the rest of the world since the time of King Solomon to the Greeks, Arabs and Romans. It has a plethora of forts, temples, beaches and wildlife sanctuaries that regularly attract visitors.

Pazhassi Dam

Constructed across the Valapattanam river, Pazhassi dam is a sought-after tourist spot in Kannur district that is known for its scenic beauty and serene environs.

Named after the legendary King Pazhassi Raja, it is a stone-masonry diversion structure irrigating the Thalassery and Thaliparambra taluks of Kannur district. The reservoir with green-carpeted surroundings has been attracting people from far and near.

Arakkal Palace

The palace complex called Kettu is an interconnected long block around a large open ground used for offering prayers or namaz. There are warehouse facilities and trade related buildings around the palace. The palace is built predominantly of laterite and wood exhibiting traits of local architecture, yet retaining an identity of its own.

The independent units in the Arrakkal Palace are situated around courtyards. One of these blocks is considered sacred and houses a cot and a seating chair, within which a lamp is always kept lit. One can also find four mosques around the main palace block.

Vismaya Infotainment Centre

Inside a 70 km radius of Bekal Fort, Parassinikkadavu Temple and Pazhassi Dam is one of Northern Kerala’s finest urban attractions, the Vismaya Infotainment Centre. Its state-of-the-art and well-maintained facilities compliment the fact that its Water Park is the only one of its kind in India to be promoted by a Co-operative Society.

The entertainment options are countless, with children and adults alike partaking in its land rides, water rides, thrill rides and special kid’s rides. It has a world-class conference hall and dormitory facilities as well.
